Language Arts- Revups

REVUPS is an acronym formed using the six steps below. The teacher selects three or more vocabulary words to teach from a text. Direct instruction occurs after the text has been read aloud and discussed. Students are encouraged to use the words frequently at school and at home.

R- Read and Repeat

E- Explain the word

V- Vocabulary examples

U- Use the word

P-Partners share examples

S- Share examples with the class

We read the story What Are Rocks Made Of this week and selected the words naturally, substances, distance and speckled to focus on. For each word we followed the six steps listed above.
Students were then asked to write each of the words they learned about in a sentence.
Have your child explain the words to you and have them use each word in a sentence.

Writing

During our writing time students have been focusing on using one or two of the five new strategies in their journals. Using the example text below as a group we read over the first and second version of the main events of taking a roller coaster ride. We then looked through to see if we could find any examples of the five strategies. Students then took the idea of riding a roller coaster and went to write their own version trying to use the five new strategies.
After students had finished their version we went over version 3. Students then had time to go back and add anything they thought they were missing. Once students thought they were finished they used pencil crayons to underline where they had used a strategy in their writing. Finally students shared their writing with the class.
