2School
Our first day of 2School was amazing!!!!

Main Question: What is our Ripple Effect? How do our choices impact the world around us?

Mrs. Montgomery & The Historical Classroom
Our first day of 2School was located at the Ed Center& the Safran Center in Downtown Calgary. We met Mrs. Montgomery aka Mrs. Margeaux. Mrs. Margeaux is our 2School expert who will be spending the week with us; teaching and helping us learn all new sorts of information and how all of it is tied to a ripple effect in one way or another. Mrs. Margeaux answered all of our important questions we had and then took us into the historical classroom.
When we first got to the Historical Classroom students were in awe of all the artifacts that were in the classroom. After getting a chance to look around, students were asked to pick one artifact that really intrigued them. They then sketched the artifact in their journals and wrote down any questions they had about these artifacts. They shared with a partner first and then were given some time to ask Mrs. Margeaux their questions.

Artifacts in the Historical Classroom
Below are some of the artifacts located in the historical classroom. These are some of the objects that the students were sketching in their journals in the above pictures.

Some interesting facts we learned:

  • Safran building was built in 1908- it is 111 years old and was the first high school in Calgary
  • George Stanley was the creator of our Canada Flag- he went to the Safran school
  • Balmoral School is photographed below with a picture of the British Flag- Ask your child to explain why that is!

Skyline View- City of Calgary
We went up to the 8th floor of the Ed building and got a really good view of the city. Mrs. Margeaux told us all about the different buildings that were built and why Downtown can be considered the "heart" of the city.
Ask your child about some of the interesting facts we learned about.
Do you remember what Mohkintsis means?

Looking at Architecture and Rocks
We've been learning lots about Rocks & Minerals in class. Here students are taking a look at some of the architecture found in the Ed Center. Students are lying down looking up at the different type of rock.

Some things we learned and some questions you can ask your child:

1. This rock is Sandstone
Question:
What type of rock is Sandstone? Igneous, Sedimentary or Metamorphic?

2. This rock is Sandstone
Questions:
Where in the city did it come from?
Why are the builders using sandstone and not wood?
What happened to the stone?

3. Buildings made out of Sandstone are the oldest buildings in Calgary.
Questions:
Which buildings are older- sandstone buildings or brick buildings?

Do you remember the name of this type of rock?

Tour of the Ed Center
Mrs. Margeaux took us on a tour of the buildings.

Thompson Family Park
This site was first recognized as a park in 1929, when space on the site was developed for use as a lawn bowling green. Over the years, the site has been used for a variety of other reasons as well, including a picnic and sitting area, and a play area equipped with a small playground for kids in the community.
On October 14, 2016, a grand opening celebration was attended by the Mayor, Councillor, Director of Parks and the Thomson Family. This new inner-city green space will give residents of the Beltline community further outdoor recreation opportunities and a chance to engage with nature right outside their doors.

Students had a chance to enjoy the park this afternoon. Mrs. Margeaux explained to us that
the space was redeveloped for a variety of reasons.

Some questions you could ask your child:
What some of the changes to the park since it re-opened?
Why is this space so important to the community?
What are some of the events that the community holds here?
